my heater fan has stopped working. how do i get to it to see if its gubbed and needs changed? When i turn the heater control on the relay activates as the dash lights dim for a second so im guessing its the fan motor thats buggered.

Most of the problems with heater fans are down to either dirt of a failed resistor pack. They are quite easy to get to and clean - there have been several threads lately about how to do it. and I suggest you use the zone search engine or go back through the threads for 3-4 weeks.
The heater blower motor and fan spindles/blades can be reached by removing or pulling forward the flexible bulkhead cover - just a few screws and lift the bonnet shut rubber off. If the fans are working at all, you can try a quick fix of squirting in WD40 or silicon into the spindle area on each side of the motor. This actually worked on mine for a while but eventually I had to give it all a good clean up.
You'll see on previous threads that BMW fitted 2 different types of heater blower assembly and the position of the resistor pack depends on which one you've got. The older one is accessible from inside the car by removing the glovebox. The later one is accessed from the engine side of the bulkhead as described above and is situated centrally in front of the motor pointing down.
Elbow grease and contact cleaner will work wonders if of course there's nothing fundementally wrong.
Just searched and found several threads under 'heater blower' , here's one
