CPS Problem

Car sometimes wont start until I pull crank shaft sensors (two?) On gearbox bellhousing and then re insert them...
Heard the top sensor is the speed sensor and the bottom one is the actual cps? Do I just need to replace the cps?
Also is it normal for a weak/failing sensor to sometimes start and then fully fail till the point of pulling it out and putting it back in? Then the car fires.
Worried it could be the reference pin on the fly wheel thats damaged.
