URGENT help please. Mystery Bracket

Hi, I'm replacing the cam belt on my 320i E30 with the M20 engine and I might have been abit careless and dropped a "mystery bracket" without knowing where it came from. I found it balanced on the water pump pulley I think so must have dropped from somewhere above there. I need to get the car back together tomorrow so please could someone help me identify the bracket? Ideally I'd like to put it back on but it doesn't look that important so would probably be ok without. Thanks so much for the help.

Take a look on realoem.com
You can enter the last 7 or 8 digits of your VIN number or just search for your model of car manually, and then search through the exploded diagrams to check where it comes from.

It's been a while since I've done a cambelt on a M20, but that looks like the sort of bracket that wraps around a wire and bolts to somewhere in place. Doesn't hold the crank sensor in place does it.

Clean the bracket; it may have a part number on, which you can either google or use realoem to search.

That's not for the crank sensor - that's a flat mounting surface with two 13mm bolt holes.
I've just rebuilt my M20, and I don't recall seeing anything like that.

There should be a spring clip holding the CPS wire on a facelift M20, but that's not it.
Is the M20 in question pre or post facelift?

I am guessing it is some sort of homemade engine lift hook sandwiched between the head and the top timing cover and retained by a 13 mm bolt. NO M20 engine BMW ever left the factory with one of them attached to it !

My car is a 1990 E30 cabriolet. I believe it is a facelift as it has a separate coolant tank on near the right wing (if this is the right way to identify it!?). I've put it all back together and runs sweetly, must be the weight saving of not having that bracket or the fact that the timing was about a tooth out before!
