Gearbox lever play.

Hi to all.. :)

I have ZF 5 speed gearbox in my '88 m20b20 and the play in lever is terrifying.. There is no "resistance" between 1st and reverse, and all other gears. I did read on e30wiki about bad bushings on selector rod but...

6 months ago I removed my gearbox from car to check on cluch, and take a look on rod and bushings and it;s seems fine, no big play at all, and on the other side, gearbox selector join is so easy to turn left and right and almost non resistens when by hand turn to reverse..

I hed e46 getrag nearby and it is impossible to get it in reverse by hend, without lever..

So I guessing that my gearbox components inside are worn out??
What is making that extra resistance when going for reverse, gearbox it self or..??

Any good advice on this one? :)

My lever "wiggles" a lot? Going in to gear it's nice and stiff but the lever itself is so floppy? What would cause that or is that similar to your problem? I have a m20b20 too

The main cause is wear in the joint on the back of the gearbox where it joins the linkage to the gear lever. Other worn bushes on both the fixed and moving linkage also contribute.

Part 13 is the main culprit. It was modified at one point, and may need a new 10 to go with it, even if 10 isn't worn.

In most cases Brianmoooore is right. In my case all linkage are stiff end no play at all.. but the part 13 (when disconnected all linkage) was so easy to play with, no resistens what so ever, and it was not play in part 13 it was play inside the gearbox..

Get your car up, and take a look where is the play..

Need a bit of help here......jumped across threads from General E30 thread as it may be more appropriate here.....

.....much longer than my orginal (on the right) never going to fit,

My car runs a M52b28 with (I think) a 318is gearbox.....
I saw this id number on my g/box.....can anyone tell me the part number I need to order?

Why do you want to replace old one?

I had short one on my '88 m20b20/zf manual gearbox, and keep it on when installed getrag 240.

The old one has too much play at each end as its worn

Ordered another one from BMW and I got this one:

Too long (again) and the fixings are different lengths .......I give up!
I've just put the old one back on and replaced the other parts.

What part number did you oreder? 25111221250?

I guess that you can make some new bushings and make old one usable again..

If it's the pin that is too long, then you need the matching part to go with it. Modified somewhere along the production run, to reduce the wear on this joint.
