The car will sit lower due to the weight difference. They should fit

I have saloon rear shocks on my touring, but they are uprated shocks, I wouldn't advise fitting 2nd hand 316i shocks to a touring etc.
It's the springs that govern the height on a car, not the shocks BTW

so if they turn out to be off a saloon the ones off a 325 and 320 would be similar to the standard 318 tourer rating?
i know new ones arnt a lot though
i thought the springs gave the ride height too nothing to do with shocks?

No that's right, the dampers are there to 'dampen' the bumps, the springs keep the car at a certain height, and take the majority of the work from the dampers.
If you're buying 2nd hand stuff, I'd say yes go ahead if they are uprated items i.e. bilsteins/H&R's etc, but I wouldn't put standard shocks from a saloon on a touring.

Aren't the touring shocks stronger - originally designed to cope with extra loadings such as dogs and guns in the back for hunting in the German countryside?

Yes, that's why I said if they are uprated items they will be fine, my touring handles great on saloon bilstein shock absorbers.

well spoke to the guy and they are def off a saloon
but he did say they are gas ones off a 325i so i might put them on and try them,i assume the oil filled ones were standard and aftermarket are gas ones?
