Hi, I changed the oil in my 1988 325i at the weekend for 80W 90. Drained the old oil out and it was a bit dirty. The shift is now worse than ever, especially when it is cold. Does anyone know why?

Cheers :?

Sounds to me like the oil is too thick especially as you say it improves when it gets warm, i had this on a previous car after having a suposad specialist fit a new clutch and it turned out he had put the wrong grade in as it was cheaper  so i did a search and found this nugget of info from 'oilman'

"For the gear box I would recomend the Silkolene Syn5 75w-90."

he recomended that for a 325 so that could be the ticket 8)

Will have to change it over when i get time. Sounds like 75W 90 must be the recommended grade. Thanks.

Had the same problem with one of mine. Think ATF had been used before instead of 80W.

Im using a 75w90 and the gear changes are very hard when cold but i dont care as when it heats up its just right, with ATF you get easy gear change when cold but when 'giving it some' the changes ger harder as the fluid heats up.

I got eaxctly the same problem with mine now. If i let the engine warm up for 5 mins before i drive it seems ok, but who the hell wants to do this every time !? i'll have to get mine changed i reckon

This is what i am starting to think! I would have thought that changing the oil made things better but it doesn't seem so.

Thanks for the replies
