handbrake cables

I'm in the process of dropping the rear axle for refurb and I've got stuck at the handrake cable. The nut is slack at the lever end and the rear shoes and that weird assembly at the hub is all removed but the where the sheath goes into the back of the backing plate it's stuck.

I've read the wiki but that's for replacing the cable, which I don't need to do. With the cable removed it says about using a drift to knock the union out. Is there any way to do it with the cable in place?

I don't really want to pull through the cables in case I have difficulty threading them back through.

Mole grips on the gland, they usually come out quite easily, unlike modern scrap.

If you replace the cables don't buy paged from ECP as they are just chinese shite, dealer only now for decent cables

Thanks, I tried mole grips but I've only got a big set so couldn't get the jaws on there very well... I'll stick at it or see if I can borrow a pair of pointy nose ones off someone. Just wondered if there was a quicker win. I guess I'll just need to be patient.

Don't really want to replace them if I can help it. They are fine and I've decided to sell the car so now I'm finishing it off ready for the potential new owner. I'm not cutting corners and I'm doing it how I would want it, but I want to avoid extra unnecessary expense at this point I'll already be making a loss
