E30 Zone

In the middle of an M40 to M42 swap as well as a steering rack swap to the E46 clubsport rack. I have bought the pipes and steering linkage from danthe but after putting the engine in and manifold on it's still catching on the lower UJ every half turn.

Solutions? Suggestions?

You need to mount the rack in the front holes on the crossmember to move the rack foward. This moves the angle of the joint and gives a little more room to the manifold.

The front holes are for the manual racks and are slightly too close together but can be drilled or filed to suit.

I had that when I attempted something similar many years ago. I gave up with it in the end, good luck finding a solution.

Front

I did the Corsa mod and mount on the front holes (I didn't have to do anything to them) but it still scuffs a little, but only on the heat wrap I have on the manifold, not the manifold it's self. I fitted some updated Vorshlag engine mounts. They stop the engine moving as much, but it does sit slightly lower because I now have bags of room under my strut brace where as I didn't before. So I'd assume that with standard slightly higher mounts you should be ok. Also with Dans pipe kit, the long hard line which connects to the pump isn't best suited to the M42 and needs a bit of gentle bending to fit over the engine leg on the left hand side.

Thanks for all the input guys. Rack to front holes and get that pipe bent. I think I might file some surplus metal off the UJ for a little more clearance too.

I'm using Revshift's soft poly engine mounts which are, I think, a bit taller than normal ones, not sure it it's helping or hindering to be honest but the engine is definitely sitting tight. I'll keep you guys posted.

This information about the m42 and danthe's pipes/mount holes should be put on the wiki a little more clearly as it alludes to the issue but doesn't say who it specifically effects. If any admins have a moment to bop it in the complications section.

Some 318iS owners have reported issues with steering linkage clearance when using the Z3 or E46 rack, so pay attention to which linkage you choose before starting. In particular, the Guibo-delete/corsa/danthe linkage requires the rack to fit in the Non-PAS holes and still occasionally rubs on the manifolds (for both M42 and M44 engines). These holes may require drilling or filing to fit the rack mounting bolts through in the correct position.

318is owners may find that when buying danthe's power steering pipe kit that the straight hard line which runs behind the rack and around the engine mount to the pump will need some slight bending to fit over the engine mounting.

The plastic undertray on these cars can also interrupt with the fitting of the rack, so be prepared to cut away some of the plastic to make everything fit.
