Any engine or engine loom changes taken place? And the eternal question:What model and age? We don't have working crystal balls!

If it's worked for two years, then the engine loom and body loom must be compatible. Early cars routed the tacho. signal to the cluster by a separate three pin plug and socket coming off of the loom near the engine ECU.
The tacho. signal is sensitive to a poor connection where it goes through pin 9 (black wire) of the 20 pin c101 engine loom plug and socket next to the fusebox, so check they are screwed together properly.
What age is the 2.5 engine and loom?

honestly i have no idea, i got the car the way it is. think its the later engine though, theres no dodgy looking wiring anywhere, looks like whoever did it stripped a rotten 325 sport and put all the running gear and wiring onto a clean 316 shell.

You might have stripped a sport, but your car is not a sport by any definition.
What you really need to do is find the ECU and give us the numbers off it, as that'll help us identify the age of the installed parts.
Niggling problems like this are usually covered in the Wiki:

There isn't! There must have been many more things out of action as well.
As ever, if you don't give us the complete picture, then you won't get the correct diagnosis.

How do you mean full picture. I told you my rev counter wasn't working. That was the full picture. I never noticed anything else that wasn't working as normal.

What fuse was it?
Mines not working either .

The fuse that covers the rev counter (Fuse 10) would have also knocked out the fuel and temp gauge, the service indicators, the reverse lights and the OBC or clock, depending on what was fitted. If it was a different fuse then the OP's car is an electrical nightmare that could catch fire at any moment.

Mine aint a fuse more likely the board.
I'll have a check today and see if the service indicators reset and take it from there as I have just done and engine swap m20 facelift for m20 facelift so will check pin 9 iirc on the c101 plug.
