With the back end and both rear wheels off the ground can spinning and observing the wheels indicate as to whether the 3 series is fitted with an lsd?

Possibly.

Put car in neutral, both wheels off the ground. If you spin one wheel by hand and the other spins in the same direction it's either an LSD or a welded diff. If you spin one wheel and the other spins the opposite way it's an open diff.

... or knackered LSD needing a rebuilt, like 90% of the LSDs on 25 year old cars.

Simplest method is to look at the metal tag that's on the diff, and see if has a letter "S" on it.

Only certain way is to take the rear cover off and see what's inside.
