key fells funny in drivers door

When i go to lock my car i put the key in the lock which is in the vertical plane, turn it anti clockwise and i can feel a 'springy' resistance until i get to about 45 degrees of rotation when there is a bit of a bang noise and the key goes slack in the lock i.e. it turns much more freely. it carries on rotating until its horizontal which is when the central locking activates and i can pull the key out of the lock. I was thinking that the lock should always be vertically aligned whether the car is locked or unlocked?

they go stiff when theyre fooked, its suppose to lock into position at 45 degrees thats your dead lock position

Turning the key 45 degrees should lock the door and the key will return to vertical. Once past the 'springy resistance' to 90 degrees the deadlocks will lock and the key will stay horizontal - you can remove the key with the lock in either position.
If yours isn't locking at all until 90 degrees (horizontal), you have an issue with the locking mechanism - my touring does this occasionally but I haven't looked into why yet.

Is there a remote locking retrofit for the E30?

sounds like the pin on the lock has broken/worn through , new lock kit is £20 odd, remove the lock and re build the barrel and its as good as new, also a chance to clean/de grease/oil up the other bits in the door

About £20 from BMW directly.
That's for the driver's side, by the way.
