Sounds like a broken spring, the shock absorbers are there to damp the bumps, the springs actually hold the car up, broken springs on the E30 are quite common.

Don't swear at me!!

I've never been a mondeo fan so couldn't say!

I can say that the E30 is quite old now, I have had 2 E30's with broken springs, and I have read numerous posts on here with regarding broken springs.

i just looked they do look different this would effect the ride hight will it cus its the shock not the spring mount

The ride height is governed by two things, The springs and rear subframe bushes. The shocks do not affect ride height.

A car will ride/drive at the same height without shocks fitted, but it will bounce about all over the place without the dampening effect of the shocks.

Dampers hardly effect the ride height of the car, the reason the top mount can cause different ride height is when the shock absorber goes through the top mount, and cause it to sag slightly.
