fan shroud

I have just sourced a missing fan shroud for my 318is however my radiator appears to be wider the new shroud mountings are 440mm wide and the mountings on the car are 500mm .
I assume my car has been fitted with a rad from an e36 318is as they have the wider rad however the shroud from an e36 is to deep for my car, has anyone else come across this and do I really need a shroud if I have a wider and hence more efficient rad?any idea how to get a shroud to fit or where to source the correct one
