right this has been an on going problem that has got worse over time untill Friday when it just failed to start!
http://www.e30zone.co.uk/modules.php?na ... highlight=
Car now belongs to my brother in law.
he phoned me friday night to say hed broke down,so go over there and towed him home.
Went today and did a few checks as follows.
Petrol in it-yes
Good strong spark-yes
Air leaks-no
Swapped AFM
Fuel pump running-only when cranking
(swapped pump with the one from my car so i know its good.)
Fuel pump relay-(swapped pump with the one from my car so i know its good.)
ICV-swapped for another(known working)
Fuse 11-Good
I bridged pins 30 and 87 on the relay and pump is going fine.
Also took a feed from the battery + to fuse 11 and pump running fine.
But it still isnt running and im stuck.
When i switch the ignition on there is nothing,no wooring noise.
Is this likely to be the problem?
Why is there no wooring noise?
Possible FPR or ECU?
So help please someone!
Also i have took off the fuel pipe and petrol is coming out when cranking

timing belt changed about 5000miles ago, plus it turns over fine!
No strange noises etc.
Pressure release vaive?
Where and what?

You say you changed the belt a while ago so it may be worth checking that everything is still lined up and have a look at the condition of the crank position sensor wire that runs across the front of the block.
It's quite easy to put it back in the wrong place, leaving it loose where the belt for the water pump can rub through it.

crank senser wire.good call, did notice it was loose today but didnt notice any splits but will check that tomorrow

sounds like a crank/cam position sensor fault to me

anyway of testing it?
Thats if theres no obvious breaks that is

fuel pressure perhaps?

the pressure release valve is at the end of the fuel rail will get pics tomoro. it controls the fuel pressure.....

ah you mean fuel pressure regulater

sorry mate-terminology
Yes did put a ? about that and the ECU in my first post, just need it confirming wether this being faulty would give these symptoms.

eko, i reckon getting the fuel system tested, fault codes read etc would be worth your while - its not expensive, will help you rule things out at very minimum, and you could end up spending so much time and money otherwise. the haynes manual will cover basic tests for TPS and cam/crank sensor resistances, these are definitely worth checking. same for temperature sensor. cam position sensor and TPS would definitely be my starting places though, then temp sensor, then look at measuring the fuel delivery etc. I wouldn't expect it to be the ICV if its as bad as described.

Got it running
Removed crank senser,it had been rubbing on the belt and had worn through!
Fitted another one and it fired first time.
Original problem of going sluggish at times seems to be still there but at least it is drivable now.
Thanks to you lot that offered advice, big help and much appreciated
