316i cranks but wont start?

Hi guys,
I bought a 316i recently and decided to fix it up a bit. The temp. sensor to the dash wasnt working, so I replaced both of the sensors on the block. Power steering wasnt working but i havent got round to that yet. I changed the timing belt and all the idlers and the tensioner.

When it comes to starting the car up after rebuilding the engine, it turns over but doesnt want to fire. what could be the problem here?
I have checked for spark and this is ok, I have also checked for fuel and this is ok up to the pressure regulator.

Another question I have is, does the cps at the front of the engine just measure crank speed, or does it also have something to do with timing? My thoughts are that i might have had the crank 1 revolution out when doing the timing.

Thanks,
josh[/b]

Have you had the cam pulley off of the camshaft during your work?

I have had a friend come round to have a look with me, and the timing is spot on. I didn't take the pulley off the camshaft. I made a mark on the camshaft pulley and the casing, when i slotted a screwdriver into the flywheel for tdc, these marks lined up.

a thought i have just had is, i have removed the central locking module from the car, could this have some sort of safety device that stops the injectors fueling if the car has a crash?

I wouldn't have thought the Central locking module, would effect the car starting.

If the cam pulley hasn't been loosened on the camshaft taper, then it's impossible for the timing to be 180 degrees out.
" I have also checked for fuel and this is ok up to the pressure regulator." You don't say how much of the car you have had apart, and I have no idea as to what level of mechanical knowledge you have, but this statement of yours could be a clue to the problem.
The fuel supply pipe should connect directly to the fuel rail, not the pressure regulator. The hose connecting to the FPR is open to the fuel tank and shouldn't have any pressure in it.

From my experiences I'd be looking at the CPS

just my 4 penneth

so from what your saying, the pressure regulator controls pressure out of the fuel rail and back to the tank? so the supply pipe should connect to the metal pipe, and the return should connect to the plastic pipe.

No CPS = no fuel pressure. OP says he has fuel.

Don't see any mention as to whether you have spark at the plugs?

i have spark at the plugs, and i have fuel coming through the supply hose, which means the fuel pump is working ok

How do i check for 12v to the injectors?

I tested the injectors by cranking the engine and holding a pipe to my ear to listen for the clicking.
I've found the solution to the problem, but it was a really strange solution.

The firing order for this engine is 1,3,4,2 i believe, so i kept this in the same order around the rotor, but by putting the 1st piston ht lead going to the bottom terminal of the distributor cap rather than the top, this somehow helped, and it spluttered into life when i tried it.
