petrol gauge and rev prob

problem as above the petrol lights comes on even when half full an goes off some times an the needle is not accurate moves about ended up thinking got petrol then ran out with the rev needle mind of its own while driving seams to go high then low then to 1 when doing 30 speed
could it be the unit faulty or prob on the back
