I hav ebeen offered a 1985 528 in good nick, for pennies. The only big problem I can find is the power steering pump is knackered. Can you drive one of these old beasts with the power steering not working? Will it do much more damage? is it very dangerous?

It will be majorly heavy
And if the pumps running but with no fluid in it'll probably dry out, and start to fall to bits when the bearings break up
Driving a car with failed power steering is nothing like driving a car that isn't fitted with power steering

Remove the belt that drives the pump.
Obviously, the steering will be heavier and almost impossible to turn the front wheels unless the car is rolling.

Drove one of mine for several weeks whilst I sourced a replacement pump!
Once rolling,it was hard to tell the pump belt was not fitted,TBO.
