m40 (316i) keeps stalling.
When I first start it it hunts around for the idle, doesn't really find it. Then evertime i come to a stop (clutch to the floor) it just cuts out unless I give it a bit of revs.
I have a few ideas;
1) Intake leek, I did look last saturday, but couldn't see anything will look again
2) ICV took this out last weekend and gave it a good clean with carb cleaner.
A)ARE you suppossed to be able to move any bits inside with a screw driver?
B) what is supposed to happen when you unplug it, my engine just stalls, I thought the rev's were supposed to rise?
3)AFM, cleaned that out as well, seams to be pretty smooth in operation
4)Blue temperature sensor, haven't looked at this yet, but i does seam to be worse when cold.
5)Exhuast, I have a hole in the exhuast centre box, swapping it this weekend, but would this affect it?
6) Fuel pump/filter/leek has been a bit of a fuel smell around....( iknw the filler pipe leeks, and I knw this doesn't effect it....
7) Anything else?
Thanks

better hurry up with the m30 swap looks like the m40 is on its way out thank goodness
i'd say ICV. does it hum when plugged in with ignition on? it should do. and the rotating valve thing inside should spin smoothly.

I know I can't wait to get ride of it! M10 was waaaaaaaay better.
There is a flap in the ICV , which i couldn't move.. should it with a screw driver then?

Have you had the inlet manifold off before?
Same thing happened with mine, took it all back off, gave it a spring clean and grease the gasket's up. That seemed to have made a decent improvment and i then replaced the blue plug sensor (About Ԛ£10 ECP). Been fine ever since.

The flap thingy inside the ICV should move when u ex. shake the ICV. It should move fairly easily. For example when u turn it. Also car should not die when u remove the plug off.
I had the same problem, but mine was the AFM. It had a worn carbon track at the spot where the needle is when the car is at idle.

Thanks for that.
It seams to be getting worse. Its actually worse since last weekend after I cleaned it all out.
Will try again this weekend.

ICV is clean, soaked it over night. Tested it like it says in haynes at it seams to be opening and closing correctly.
Now when the car is cold it idles at 1500rpm then at 600rpm when warm, seams odd.
It also still cuts out.
I have my afm to look at tonight...what should i be looking for?
thanks

O.K cleaned the AFM and the throttle body, the latter had loads of gunk in it! Put so much carb cleaner in it it took a while to start.... Best change my oil soon!
However the problem is still there.... still stalls still doesn't know how to idle, seam to be idling at 1400rpm at most of the time, sometimes goes right down to 600rpm though.
I'm going to try a new blue temperature sender, is that underneth the intake manifold pretty much on the block? Blue coloured thing?
If that does nothing i'm going to try a different ICV.
Anyone got a spare m40 one that they know works? PM me thanks
