Dose any one know if it's normal for the fuel pump to hum quiet loud on a 318i cab 92 spec.
Both when idleing and driving.
Thanks

mine too, same idleing and driving. whatever you do don't replace it with a pump for a diffrent engine than 318, i tried this and didn't work, the engine didn't start. i put my old one back in and still driving with it. the sound, goes away and sometimes comes back humming i just ignore it.

fuel pumps usually become noisy when the motor bearings begin to fail maybe time for a new one before it fails completely

I also had a buzzing pump, and changing it for a new one made a noticable difference.
Fuel pumps are common through the E30 range as long as the injection systems are the same.
Micheal, can't understand why yours didn't work, dodgy pump?

i have the 320i engine, and replaced the pump with a 318i pump, same injection model L-jetronic. i seen the 318 drive that day before i took out it's pump and put it in mine.
on the 318 worked wonders not a sound. but when installed on mine, cranked for half a day, couldn't manage to start the engine.
put in my old pump and started from the first key turn, so obviously there was a problem fitting a 318 pump on a 320i

i think it might have been a pressure diffrence problem.

guys, my fuel pump also makes whining noise at high pitch. I notice when I just come to a hault after a long jurney and did not cut off the engine. when I put down the windows the sound is very obvious.
my ride orignially is a 320i and I have done a 325i conversion.
Are the fuel pump for 320i and 325i are same?
or do I have to install a 320i pump once again as thats the original spec right now?
what ever, I am pretty scared going off long distance. I would like to carry a spare fuel pump for what ever reason.
TQ

If the car is a motronic then they are the same....even the same as 316i/318i, the pressure is regulated by the erm fuel pressure regulator

, but I'm not sure about the L-jet cars.

thanks, yes mine is a Motronics 173 series aka 1.3 so I can fix in 320, 325, 318 or 316 great.
