Alrite people
Well I've lost my keys so I have got to change the locks! I was wondering how hard it's going to be to get the ignition out without the key in. Any help or tips would be appreciated
Cheers

righty you'll need a hair clip, (you can use wire, but it's a faff) remove the blob, straighen it out. You'll be using the straighter back section, so with decent pliers, straighten the slight bend out at the end and re-bend approx 1.5-2mm by 30-40 degrees.
key in, turn to position 1 and insert the hair clip with the bend facing away from the centre. push it in about 5cm and turn it through 90deg in the same way yo'd turn the key. You'll know when you're in the right place as you'll feel a light sprung resistance and it'll go loose and slide out

With no key to insert into the barrel, you are going to have to swap the entire lock.
Remove the steery wheel
Remove the lower column shroud
Using a suitable impliment

extract the shear bolts that retain the lock to the column

Can you get the steering wheel off with the steering lock on and without breaking anything... I seem to remember I couldn't when I tried a few weeks ago.

doesnt the key have to be in the barrel in position one to release the wheel in the first place? so if you have no key that would be impossible?

Me too!
Perhaps some chopping of the column shroud will be called for to access the lock mounting bolts, then let it slide down to release the wheel?

What's wrong with taking the paperwork for the car to BMW and ordering a new key?
If the lock isn't the original, then the barrel is useless anyway, so I think I'd be attacking it in situ with a drill, hopefully removing the remains of the tumblers, then turning the butchered barrel to position one and extracting it with a pin.

To get the wheel off with no key - insert a hacksaw in the gap between the uppewr column shroud and the wheel. Saw away for about 5 mins and you'll cut through the steering lock pawl. The wheel will them come off and you can fit a replacement steering lock.
