Auto gearbox problem (I think)

I was cruising along the M1 when the engine started coughing and the accelerator gradually stopped working.

Pulled over and got towed home, and noticed an oil leak from underneath the clutch area, wasn't the best light but had a good poke around and saw that there were two holes open on the side of the gearbox, and I could see through and see teeth, which didn't seem right.

Was too dark to take a photo but here's where the holes are:

Am I right in thinking that there should be some kind of cables/plugs there? I've seen a few other photos of gearboxes with leads attached to that area. I also noticed a stray connector near the fusebox up by the engine.

Any ideas?

If you want us to sort what's really wrong with your car, you'll have to give us a few clues.
Cranking OK? Sparks at the plugs when cranking? Fuel pump running when cranking? Fuel pump running when 30 and 87 of the pump relay linked?
