Rear drum brakes - Help !!

Getting the Baur ready for her Irish MOT (NCT) on Sunday, so thought I would replace the rear brake shoes.

I've followed the Bentley/Haynes instructions, but once back together, the brake pedal travel is long and the handbrake is non-existent (lever pulls all the way up).

This has to be down to the self-adjuster mechanism being incorrectly assembled, I just can't get my head around it.

I have the adjuster bar screwed all the way in, and have tried to locate the lever properly but something is not right.

Can anyone help me with this, with pics or child like instructions !?

thanks, and I have learnt my lesson on this one

Have you tried adjusting it so that it is not screwed all the way in?

Generally with drum rear brakes, you adjust them to the point where they just begin to bind, then back them off one notch.

Check carefully that you have the springs and levers in the correct position, the Haynes photo's are quite good.

Then I slip the drum on and see if it is free to turn,if so,whip it off and wind the adjuster out a bit and try again.

as Speedtouch says, you are aiming for a 'just binding' condition.
