My rear pads and discs are worn and a bit tired so I was thinking about an upgrade.Is there any benefit to fitting "performance" kit to the rear when most of the braking is done in the front if there is what would be recomended

Unless your fronts are upgraded no point. I drive my car really hard (rally car) and I got standard rear discs with mintex 1144 slightly upgraded pads but rx7 front brakes. Don't bother with all the grooved sh#te as pretty pointless. Ive tried most and ended up back to standard disc as they last longer and don't crack like the drilled bling ones.

There is a 280mm (20mm) rear disc upgrade using Z1 discs but it's bloody expensive.

The easiest cheapest rear brake upgrade I have found is to remove the rear proportioning valve. Part 5 here http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?mod ... g=34&fg=15.

Its located under the master cylinder and its job is to limit the fluid pressure supplied to the rear calipers.
Any disk or caliper upgrade is still limited by this valve.

To modify: 1.remove, 2.unscrew top, 3.remove internals, 4.replace top, 5.refit.

If the standard front setup is retained then turn-in under braking is improved when abs is switched off.
If abs is retained balance remains the same but brake efficiency is improved.

I have done this mod to my touring and it feels much nicer to drive now.
