Hi,

Just bought myself a 1985 316 (1.8 m10 carb?), it seems pretty sound (60000 miles but has few  on the clock). First ever beemer :D

I have found a few problems though and was wondering if you could help me out.

- The gearbox seems a bit duff, it is sometimes difficult to get it into second gear and makes a nasty noise in doing so. Any quick/cheap fixes or am I looking at getting a new gearbox. If so what kind of price are you looking at to get one and fit it, also would a 5 speed manual box be directly swappable with the 4 speed manual thats in it?

- Could somebody point me in the direction of the wiring colours used for wiring a stereo?

- Also there is a button nect to the headlight pull thing but i'[m not sure what is does? Is it a choke?

In help would be much appreciated!

Welcombe to the zone from the management!
The button next to the headlamp switch is either the rear foglight switch, or if you are lucky it is a choke knob, cause that will mean it's probably had a Webber carb conversion.
The original Pierburg carb is bad news, as it develops problems with it's auto choke and the idle control arrangements.

welcome :D

i think the gearbox trouble can be sorted by getting a rubber seal replaced, dont know what one or what it involves but im sure i was told that, mines is sticky going from 2nd to 1st when cold. sorry its a bit vague :?
could also try changing the gearbox oil?
or just get a 5 speed one
