Well, a 5w-40 fully synthetic.
The best:
Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 BMW Approved
Motul 300V 5w-40

The BMW M20 engine was designed for use with a multi-grade 10w40 to 20w50 mineral oil, putting fully synthetic in an old engine is never a good idea.
I'd stick to a semi synthetic 10w40.

Sorry I have to disagree, the BMW engine has very fine tolerances and is perfectly suited to synthetic oils.
There are too many benefits to ignore them.

Take my word for it, this is my business, not a hobby.
5w-40 synthetic all the way!

I'm not arguing with you I'm simply offering my opinion.
An M20 with 100k+ miles on the clock as most E30's have doesn't quite fit into the category "fine tolerances" IMO.
