325 High speed Hiccup - engine dies for 0.25 sec, then fine?

After a year of no problems (bar random idle speed) by 325i has twice in the last couple of days given me a momentary panic when buzzing along the motorway (at a respectable speed): All has been well and then there has been a very short cut-out before everything carried on as normal. The cut out is so short that we've barely started to slow down - BUT: One of the needles (rev-counter or speedo or both, it was just out of the corner of my eye) definitely fell to zero before jumping straight back up as normal service resumed..
So I assume I have some kind of loss of electrical power that is widespread enough to kill the engine (via the ECU?) and the dash (via the ECU?).
I'm not all that (or even at all) experienced in E30 electrics - is there any obvious areas I should look? (the fusebox and relays all look brand new..) Might it be a tired ECU? I'll have to have a rummage and check it's not sat in the path of a water leak..
