take the plastic locking trim out of the rear screen rubber then remove the rear window and in ya go.
you can pop the rear screen back in easily but the locking strip may have to be done by a garage cheaply.

You can use that blue or yellow strap/tape that is normally used to wrap newspapers or pallets of bricks. Fold it, then push through the drivers door seam where it meets the pillar. Then you can just about wrap it around the door lock pin and lift. You must fold it first though so you have a loop to wrap round the pin once its inside the car.

just out of interest, when you put the screen back in, did you use any sealant (like bathroom sealant) to ensure no water leaks??
thanks

No,I have never needed it,but first remove the seal from the car frame and clean all three grooves.Check the car frame in the lower corners,I have found tape covering drain holes, trim the tape back clear of the drain holes.
Fit the seal to the car, then re-fit the 'screen, make sure that it is central to the seal,or the locking strip will refuse to enter the corners.
If you find corrosion in the corners of the frame, you will need to sort that out before re-fitting,or bodge with sealant....

a spring loaded centre punch is also good for opening windows but a bit messy

The mushroom headed lock pins on E30s make this a very easy operation. Probably why later models aren't mushroom headed.
Don't attempt to remove the rear screen - you will rip off the demister connections.

Thanks for the tips . How ever i have no idea how to remove a windscreen or put it back in.
Worse case senerio us the trusted hammer - i'll wait till monday for some more inspiration.
Also no more ideas on how to break the glass, i am sure i can work that out.
Is there any way to trigger the central locking?

Old skool, had to do this many times, back in the days when the battery went flat & the central locking only worked from the boot on my first e30.

get a length of brake pipe and thread a bike gear cable thru it and solder the end of the brake cable to the brake pipe so theres a loop on the end.
bar the top of the door open so you can get the brake pipe down. get the loop around the lock knob pull on the cable to tighten the loop around it and pull on the brake pipe. sorted.

Using a small screwdriver, lift out the metal cover over the locking strip, centre lower on the 'screen rubber.
Pull out the rubber locking strip.
Go all round the outside of the 'screen, lifting the rubber off the glass(it tends to stick over time,so break the seal)
This next bit is the difficult bit....from the inside, push the 'screen out of the rubber....you are going to have to peel the rubber back at a top corner and attempt to lift the 'screen out of the seal.Use only your fingers,do not attempt to lever the 'screen with a tool.I guess that a 'sucker' on the glass will be a great help, but it should be do-able by fingers only.
Going back is typical Haynes manual, but do take great care to get the 'screen central on the bottom of the seal, otherwise the locking strip will not fit around the corners.Use only soft soap to lubricate the locking strip and lever the locking strip into place with a small screwdriver from the glass side only, then any slips will not leave scars in your paintwork.
