mpg needle faulty!! comes to life at 50mph

guys i hav a problem with my mpg needle which doesnt seem to work poperly ever since i removed the panel under the steering to fit my clutch master cylinder, it seems to cme to life when i hit about 50 mph!!
is it the batteries which are soldered on the back of the dials cluster??
or is it a vacume pipe sum where for it which could hav a leak?
