Reassembling the top end on my m20b25 what is the best way of cleaning the tops of the pistons while they're still in the block, 1 & 6 are up and the other 4 are down.

Cheers

you can turn the crankshaft to get the other pistons to the top, I would use some wire wool and some wd to clean them.

So as long as I get 1 and 6 back to the top before putting the cylinder head back on, I should be back at TDC?

You should find an engraved mark on the crank, that lines up with a mark on the casing,as long as they are lined up,all is well.

Will you not run the risk of dirt getting into the cylinder bores doing this :?:

Leave the top of the pistons. It helps with giving the engine a higher compression without interference.
