m20b25 starting/Idle issues

Hello there,
Wondering if anyone can help me or has had the similar problem....
First day of having the car back on the road yesterday after nearly 2 years off the road.....
Car was working fine however it had an issue when it was offroad of slight missing, and being running abit rich - took it to a 'e30 specialist' who messed around with the AFM and the circular gauge under the plastic cap - this developed a new problem/sound of like the engine was choking every 15secs, while driving this problem caused loss of power then rocketing off.
Anyway got the car back home, and adjusted the afm flap using the allen key and got it working back to normal.
Was driving around fine yesterday and parked up outside my shop. About 2-3 hours later went to start the car - it started but had an erratic idle with backfiring then cut off.
I had to then call AA to recover me back home and got home around 3AM!
Now im in a dilemma in what to do to fix this problem...
Recent work that its had done is:
Tappets set
Injectors replaced with 4pintle design Apperently for m20 off ebay(could this be a problem of running rich?).
Full service including spark plugs replaced wiv Bosch Super4.
The AA guy said it sounded like a case of bad timing, due to the fact disconnecting the AFM will make it idle rough but not cut out and backfire?
What could I check or do? Replace the AFM first then take it from there?
Cheers
Gov
