Gear linkage touching driveshaft

On the gearbox end of the driveshaft on my 1990 325i (manual box). There is a steel disc about 6" in diameter. The bolts for the guibo go through it. Anyway, everytime i select 5th gear, the linkage rubs on this disk. Does anyone know what this disk is for? Is it on the wrong way around and supposed to cover the guibo? Can i remove it? It's driving me nuts. Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Sam

It is a vibration damper.

Anyone fitting the Z3 shifter usually removes it.

Can be removed without any ill effects. Any guibo in use today doesn't require it.
