does it rev freely to the redline if you have the car in neutral?

I'm no expert on e36,but it sounds like its in get you home mode.
I drove an e36 320 with the same problem.
It wasn't my car but it turned out to be one of the engine sensors.
Don't know which one.

probably camshaft sensor.
About £90 for one from BMW, aftermarket ones are often shite and still give error codes and put the car in limp mode.
Any warning light on the dashboard?

no none what so ever. camshaft sensor being the one that meshures tdc on the cam ? or the senor on the cranck ?
is that all that coud make it this dead ?

Cam sensor sits on the side of the head, right behind the vanos solenoid
