My wipers do not work properly on intermitent. You have to hold the stock down to keep them working as soon as you let go they stop in the middle of the windscreen. Is this a motor or switch problem

Common problem.
Have a read through this to get an idea of what you need to do.

Many thanks have tried that but must be something else either relay or the motor itself do you think

That's switch/relay related,I think,is there any rubbish under the relay in the fuse box?
Then try a replacement switch.

i dont think so, what relay is it in the fuse box ? i have spares from the breaker, is a switch/relay the same thing ?

Relay is the long black one in the fuse box, they have a habit of trapping fuse's under them, causing all sorts of issues.By switch,I mean the stalk on the steery column....sorry.

Alternatively:
http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/inde ... per_faults in our own e30zone wiki.
Note that the method of removal of the scuttle grill is wrong in both links. You slide it downwards, against the pressure of the spring clips along the bottom to unhook the plastic tabs at the top, pull out the top and lift it away. No danger of damaging paintwork if done this way.
