Ok update
Decided to phone AA just incase they could help the bloke started the engine straight away he pointed out I need a new viscous coupling. Then he said he could hear squealing etc behind dizzy cap he thinks my timing belt is in need ov replacing and that could be the problem does this sound like a viable conclusion??

Faulty viscous usually means the temp goes into the red when the car is in traffic, have you checked the thermostat?

Have a look at the distributor cap and rotor arm and see how worn they are.
Every M20/30/40 engined car ive played with has had a severely worn set of these due to them being very expensive for what they are.
Wear in these components can cause all sorts of starting and running issues due to weak and unequal distribution of power to the plugs.
