Hi All,

I changed the front disks and pads on my 325 at the weekend and both retaining bolts were rounded out and rusted in, so had to be drilled out.

where can I get two new ones from ?

cheers :)

local dealer/ motor factor either really, should be easy enough to get hold of, just take the old ones with you just in case you get a numpty on the parts desk.

screwfix probably have something that will work, probably just need to trim the screw length with a junior jacksaw (trying not to damage the thread of course).

You do not atually need these screws, they just locate the disc to make fitting the road wheel easier...the proper fastener is the wheel bolts.

Snag,of course,is keeping the disc in the correct position whilst lining the wheel up,good oppotunity for teaching next door's kids some new words!

There is probably no harm is having "floating discs", the wheel and wheel bolts will hold the disc in place, no idea if anyone on here has tried this and seen if it has any negative effects on the brakes.

aftermarket brake discs do not always have the hole aligned correctly for the little allen bolt. I am running without them in the front as they don't line up to the hole on the hub.

The retaining bolts are pennies from the dealers if you need to get some

yeah, I know they aren't strictly needed, the four chunky wheel bolts seem to be holding the disk in place right now :) but just for tidiness sake, and the fact that it would robably annoy any tyre fitters I might happen to visit, I want to drill out whats left, clean the thread and fit the right (or as close as I can get) bolt.

just realised i may have issues with mine, wheels not been off for 5 years and brakes were done about 6 years ago, been stook pretty much ever since, discs are solid brown rust, pads are shot, got to replace both, it's going to be a total nightmare.

getting the sliding bit of the caliper off was easy on mine, the two big bolts holding the other half to the hub were more tricky, both sides needed 'persuading' loose with a strong ring spanner and a rubber mallet.

then I just drilled a small hole in the center of the retaining bolt and used a bigger drill to drill the head off.

i got half in sockets and a breaker bar, that'll get them off :) probably new new calipers too by then. lol.

i'll just get over zealous with the WD40 for half an your before i touch anything, see if that helps i always do the retaining bolts and wheel bolts back up with Copper grease, makes it so much easier next time around.

access is limited for the big bolts, they are behind the hub, so theres no room to get a breaker bar in there :)

gutted, makes life so much easier with a half inch socket and a breaker bar, socket set or spanner it will have to be then.

should have the parts by the end of the week, got them from a zoner cheap so doing the brakes now, although i have lots to do before its anywhere near MOT ready. spray bootlid, new wing, solder wiring, service is done. then the welding and finally MOT.

Not sure those will fit. The extra flange on the bolt head probably won't fit in the recess. Possibly for newer BMW's.

E30 ones look like this:

I wouldn't bother, after a few months the disks will rust themselves to the hubs and provide enough stiction that changing wheels wouldn't cause a problem.

You can get a breaker bar in if you turn the steering to it's full extent to make access easier.
