Hi all, I want to replace the thermostat in my 1989 325. The Haynes says I have to drain the coolant, is this really necessary?
Cheers

Yep, since the thermostat open/closes to cool the engine.

A good deal of the coolant is coming to come out anyway when you remove the thermostat elbow, so it's probably a good idea to drain it first! Why wouldn't you?

Thanks for your replies. Thought I could make it a quick job but I see I'll have to drain, it needs it anyway.
Cheers

Good idear to raise the front when draining and when you have the stat cover removed make sure the bleed hole is clear before refitting.
