E30 Zone

Hi guys. I bought a fuel neck filler pipe from a zoner last year but never got round to fitting it due our lovely weather. Since then I've tried to find online some detailed instructions on how to fit it and even downloaded the Haynes manual but no joy. Any help would be greatly appreciated or even better a local zoner to give me a wee hand in exchange for some beers lol.

it's quite easy and straightforward Colin. just offer it up into it's approximate position and all should become apparent.
are you removing your old one? without trying to sound too "Haynesish"...refitting is simply a reversal of removal

Yeah old one is to come off although the the top is already off as so badly coroded. I was scared that the fuel tank would have to come off

I think there's a clamp near the top of the pipe to hold it in place, jubilee clip at the bottom where it goes into the fuel tank, and a smaller pipe near the top for the breather ( may be one of those crimp-on clips rather than a jubilee clip for the breather which will probably need to be cut off and replaced ) - I have also got to do this job on my touring

There's also a bolt holding it on a bracket on the inner wheel arch, this is one of the many
causes of rot on the inner arch. You will need to soak it with WD40 after it's 20 years + of crap being thrown at it.

I have got this job to do too. just jack the car up, follow the pipe from the filler neck, back to the tank, would advise starting at the filler neck and working forwards to the tank on removal, and just do the opposite when re-fitting the replacement, should take no time at all. Just make sure the fuel tank is empty or almost empty just in case.

I will be doing mine this weekend, probably tomorrow afternoon so i will try and post on here how i did mine, may help.

Filler pipe is secured by just one screw behind the plastic wheel arch liner section. Unscrew this screw (don't be surprised if the whole bracket pulls away leaving a hole into the boot!), slacken off the hose clips at the rubber hose to the tank, remove the filler cap, pull the hose off at the bottom, twist the filler out of the L shaped bracket near the bottom, and pull the pipe down.
Remove the assorted hose clips securing various vent hoses just below the neck and it's out.

I cut the bolt off mine and fixed it with a cable tie lol, fook wrenching the rear inner arch out!

Works well, it rattles a touch if you try and move it but on the grand scheme of things it works well I don't normally bodge but it was quickest easiest thing to do with the time I had

If it was anything like mine its never coming out!

i'll just keep spraying with WD40 etc to loosen the bolt/nut for 30mins or so before i try to remove mine, then try, if no luck, torque wrench comes out, failing that, cut the thing off, lol.

Guess i should find out tomorrow, if its not raining.

Torque won't work, it either comes off or rounds over tbh

mine needs doing according to the MOT tester. Got a spare one though and now I know how to do it.

As an aside you should never use a torque wrench to undo anything tight. Unless it's one of the old breaker bar with a gauge on it types, it's a delicate instrument and you'll damage it by using it as a breaker bar. It's only to measure the torque applied to a fixing.

i have a breaker bar anyway so i would use that first anyway

Mine filler pipe has totally rusted away at the top, from just below the valve all the way up, the filler cap had even fallen off and was underneath the car. lol.

will be replacing mine this afternoon since its not raining. At least I got it to start now which is a result in itself. Turn the car round since my driveway is on a slope (give me more access) and get spraying with the WD40.

Cross fingers the bolt is not too tight and shears off or won't move.

My pipe replacement is not going well, put my own thread up as the main retaining bolt will not move, used a whole can of penitrating fluid so far.

How you getting on with yours???

Hopefully start mine this week as not able today due to car being covered in snow and me working 12 hours overtime today and then again tomorrow as just booked my hold. Hope it goes better for you tomorrow mate.
