Everything is running fine and the car is going really well. But there's a weird noise. It comes from the left side and doesn't appear to have any discernible trigger. It sounds like a woodpecker, a rapid tap-tap-tap-tap that is more blunted. I've heard something like it with a pump that wasn't primed.
I'm sure it is nothing to do with bodywork or suspension since it doesn't sound like it and it doesn't happen over bumps or turns or anything else I can reproduce. My only thought is that there might be a fuel pump somewhere around the left front - although there is no hesitation or other signs of fuel starvation. Power steering pump? But it can happen when the wheel is held loosely, just moving off from the lights slowly.
The only time this noise doesn't happen is sitting dead still. At least not yet.
Weird noise, no effect on driving (so far) - identify?

Does it increase in tempo with the engine speed or road speed? I assume road speed as you say it doesn't happen when you're standing still at lights for instance?
What car is it?
Have you recently put new tyres on the front?
It could be simply the result of something stuck in the tread of the tyre.

'88 325i M20, could've done with a sunroof.
Sorry, forgot the details. 1986 325i M20B25 auto. There's nothing new on it. The noise is always a rapid woodpecker tempo and doesn't vary with the car speed. No new tyres or anything I could pin this down to. The last thing I did was fit a new water pump and the water leaks have completely stopped, it has been two or three months with no issues at all.
