Been having a sort of hissing/scratching noise coming from the front of the motor as of late. Was hoping it to be my fan clutch, but after I removed the fan/clutch, the noise persisted. I don't think its the alternator... sound is more center of the motor. Gonna try a water pump now (and noticed the pully for the water pump pulley has just a little play in it). I just changed the cam belt about 800-1000 miles ago, but I don't really want to risk head/piston damage, so I've been looking for a whole water pump change kit (pump, belt, and tensioner). I've put a post up in the parts section, but if anyone knows of a specifically good place to locate one for quality/price/shipping time, I'd like to hear it!
Any other advice is welcome aswell!
Thanks!
Water pump change.. question

I'm assuming you have an M20? If not ignore the following.
I got a Contitech belt and tensioner from ECP. I also got a waterpump from ECP but they sent the wrong one, pre-facelift pumps have an extra outlet (for the differences check the Wiki: >>Clicky<<). I sent the ECP one back and got the correct one from GSF, also check that the water pump has a metal impeller, some of the cheaper ones are made of plastic. GSF were very helpful and while I was on the phone to them they got one from the store and checked it was the correct one and that it had a metal impeller.

I wonder if your nice new cam belt is destroying itself on the inside of the belt cover?

Clarko:
Yes it's sn M20. Sorry for the lack of basic info. 87 Tech1 about sums it up (M20, pre-facelift, etc etc)
Brian:
I hope it's not the cambelt going! It sound to be a mechanical failure though, like the shaft bearing are going out of the pump, not a belt rubbing off...

Yeah watch that cam shroud - if you put it back behind the bottom shroud it rubs, it goes in front. In my car at least the lower shroud tends to come forward with the top removed leaving space for the upper shroud to slide in behind, inviting the mistake.

There is/was a type of tensioner for the M20 where the centre shaft of the roller came loose in the arm that it's fitted to. The result of this is that the idler leans inwards, throwing the belt outwards into the cover. On one particular engine that I changed the belt on, there was no indication of anything amiss, until I took the covers off, and found a belt just under 10mm wide!

Well, regardless, a water pump change is probably due anyways. And since I need to/should change the cam belt while I'm there, I will also see if that is the case and not a water pump. Either wayy, I should catch the culprit. I was just wondering if anyone had seen one of those combo kits with the pump, tensioner, and a new belt...
