need to elaborate on the problem.. any funny noises, engine sound change from normal, etc, etc?

maybe a bad TPS sensor or a decently sized intake leak after the AFM somewhere?

is the fuel system (pump, injectors, regulator, etc) and ignition system (plugs, leads, dizzy & rotor arm, coil, etc) all known to be working ok?

what model/year also?

Air leak is very likely. Would show up as a AFM fault on the diagnostics.

You haven't told us what your car is yet, other than big and red.
Such details are useful when trying to work out what's wrong with things!

Had the same prob with an M40 recently. It was eventually the afm - there is a video on u yube about taking afms apart and re-positioning the potentiometer wiper arm to get a better connection. I had a go at this - no joy. If/when trying another - make damned sure you get an exact replacement with same bosch/BMW serial number ( stamped on the top). I tried two or three - until problem went away when I fitted a replacement with an exact serial number match. That was my experience anyway! Main/fuel pump relays another thought -low cost trial to replace - in addition to the other things mentioned in postings above. Good luck with this - damned annoying bit theres the right answer out there somewhere!
