316 rough tick over / hunting / cutting out

hello there its been a while since iv posted on here due to selling the 320 but i am now back in the fold. i have just picked up a 1990 316 3door in calipso red.
iv got it home and had a look around it and its not to bad condition but i do have something that needs sorting.
when running it struggles to tick over and hunts then cuts out. once u start to rev it up it seems fine no missing or abnormal noises.
is there anythin common to look into?
i have made looking at the idle air valve first job for tomorow morning.
