Oil warning light - oil at halfway level

Does anyone else get this - the oil level is at halfway on the dipstick but the light has come on the check panel. Is this common at halfway (sensitive sensor) or potentially a pressure issue?

FWIW 325i, 1990, oil service about 2k ago (may not have been exactly topped-up, oil burn isn't an issue).

Mine comes on at half way, I just put in half a litre to take it to the top mark. The sensor can take a while to notice that you've added oil too.

No real problem thats how it should work really. The oil pressure light is on the clocks and when that comes on you want to start and worry.

a few weeks after buying mine, this light came on whilst on the M25 and I panicked!! And was then confused when i pulled in at the service station and saw that it was pretty much on the halfway mark. It's good really because it gives you enough warning if you've got a large leak all of a sudden.

My low oil light has been on for the past 2 month on my e28. My oil level is fine so i put it down to the dodgy 25 year old sensor. Just haven't got around to changing it yet.

Sweet, thanks guys. Will top up soon then but doesn't sound "urgent".

take the oil level sensor off and soak it in paraffin over night... works a treat :D

Baked bean tin, filled with petrol. Dip it in, let it soak for a minute, pull it out and drain. Repeat several times. Change the petrol when it gets too dirty.

The light has gone away all by itself (car parked on level ground) - so either this is prelim-warning - or as suggested the sensor needs cleaning! I'll top-up and if the light comes back i'll do the petrol-clean method :) thanks all!
