E30 Zone

Hi all.

I have just fitted a quick-shift kit to my 320i using the E30 Zone Wiki fitting guide. I just have a couple of questions that someone who has done the swap might be able to answer:

1. Does it matter which side the selector rod attaches to the two connecting points? The rod seemed to be fitted the other way to the photos when I removed it but I have bent it and fitted it so that it sits on the other side of the gearstick base and the gearbox attachement and it seems okay?

2. Should the bend on the rod curve upwards (e.g. like a rainbow!) to miss the vibration damper? (stupid question as this way makes sense but I just want to be 100% sure!).

3. Has anyone else had problems getting the yellow washers to fit on either side of the connecting rods? (I couldnt seem to get the circlip into the groove unless I missed out the washer on one side).

Hopefully someone will be able to decipher this drivel and help me out and I'm sorry if the terminology/grammar is incorrect or confusing!

1. I'm pretty sure I've done the same on mine. I couldn't remember which way it originally went.

2. That is the right way, yes. If you remove the vibration damper (not really required) you won't have to bend the link rod at all.

3. I couldn't get either yellow washer on the end of the linkage. It is slightly wider than the original and made from a different material. I don't think it is a big issue so long as the the fit is close.

I was out for a drive this afternoon and I'm so glad I did this mod, what a difference!

You're right about the washers - the ones that fell out were rubber and a totally different size.

Can't wait to try it out now - just got to re-build the brakes, spray the alloys, fit some tyres, finish the bodywork, fit a bucket seat, give it a service, etc, etc.........

Ta Stu - that might explain things then. Perhaps I should have re-fitted the o-rings instead!

from what i know unless things have been superceded,
the yellow washers should still fit on either side of the gearbox selector block but on the end of the gear lever, the bush has been modified to making it unable to fit the yellow washers. the lever has a built in spacer so you need two washers for the job only.
and the rod becomes semi circle shaped to pass the propshaft. when fitted correctly, the rod will be on the nearside (passenger) of the tunnel.
