whining/squeeking

Above noises coming from front of the engine-(area), on my 318i touring.
Could this be the viscous wants replacing?
Any advice appreciated !

Take a three foot length of garden hose, stick one end in your ear and the other on the engine, and see if you can determine exactly where the noise is coming from.
Take the fan belt and steering belts off, and run it for no more than two minutes like this to see if the noise has gone.
