As above what would be the benefits of fitting a intercooler?

With air passing through the intercooler after being recycled from the turbo it cools the flow of air being forced into the intake manifold, making more for horse's from the engine.
The reason for more hp's is when the air leaves the turbo it has expanded due to the heat and the intake cant take the high volumes for this reason, cooling it down with an intercooler in the loop means you can force a bigger volume of air into the intake meaning a larger amount of air and fuel will be combusted per cycle in the engine, creating an increase in engine power.

because cooler air is denser and therefore the cooler the air the more bhp you can make but fit a too large ic then you get huge turbo lag

the audi logo needs to be changed to baby ....................
the turbo does the job of it sucking the unwanted out, beats using a wire coat hanger to hook it out
ok, i should behave now. no more sick jokes

As already mentioned, the compressor in the turbocharger compresses the air which significantly increases the temperature. Engines produce more power with colder air (hence 'cold air feed') and colder air is more dense - this being the key word here.
An intercooler can be used within the turbocharger system to cool the compressed air thus increasing the density. This can be of an air to liquid type or air to air type, and obviously must be mounted somewhere where cold air is going to reach it, i.e. no where near any hot part of the engine, which is why intercoolers are often seen at the bottom of the front of the car.
However intecooler efficiency must be good and size must be taken into account for the amount of flow you are expecting / aiming to achieve, otherwise turbolag will be an issue and engine power also affected.

Can a intercooler be retro fitted easly enough?

What non-intercooled turbo car do you have?

Its a 2001 td escort van,the td cars had a intercooler but the vans did not.

Probably a bolt on conversion fitting the parts from the car to the van, get yourself down to the scrapyard!

I was involved in turbocharging a 205GTi once, and we used an intercooler from a BMW diesel and it worked wonders, so as long as you get the size right then you'll be fine

If you try to make it go faster it will break quicker, thats how the blue oval disease works

a bit of a curve ball but still in the same field, could the a.c. system be rerouted to the air intake?
From reading the above about colder air giving a better bang would this be worth doing or would too much power be lost from running the a.c. to make any gains.
Sorry if this is dumb but an average of 75 to brum and back has wobbled my thinking sponge a bit.

Your AC system won't be able to flow enough air for the engine...

but could it be implemented as an addition?

In theory I suppose you could, but I can't see the gains being worthwhile. AC is great for cooling air below ambient temp, but in relatively small volumes. With an IC you're trying to return air towards ambient temp from maybe 80-90 degrees. You're better off using airflow and a big ole radiator, possibly with a water spray if you're really keen.

Definitly use more power than it would produce. Isn't the rule of thump 1bhp gain for every 10farenheit you lower the intake charge?

Its all about air density. Cold air is denser. More air more fuel more bang.
