E30 Zone

When i apply the handbrake on my touring, the car rolls back or forward a couple of inches ! almost like putting an auto in `park` and not applying the handbrake.
Any ideas please?

Just out of interest, does yours make a clunk if you give the handbrake a quick yank after you've set off? Mine does, and that is really starting to irritate me!

I always leave mine in gear. too much to risk on a 20 odd year old setup.

Yes i do, but when i apply handbrake at lights, etc, on a hill if you take your foot off the brake, its like there is a bit of play before the handbrake stops the car.

I wonder if the handbrake is slightly loose inside the disc.

It's not inside the disc, that doesn't make any sense. It's, you know, around there. What is known is that it solved the same issue on one of mine.

Keep a library of them to hand

Even if you have rear discs the hand brake uses drums and shoes. Pulling the brake handle brings the shoes up to the drum but to fully engage them the car moves slightly and pulls the two together.

Its normal AFAIK for there to be a small movement of the vehicle.

Unfortunately this could be due to a number of reasons. When were the handbrake shoes last changed? If they are reasonably old, they may need adjusting if you want them to hold firmly. Also the backplate tends to rust where the pins that hold the shoes go in, which can create a bit of slop.

The short answer is that you might want to have the handbrake assembly apart and see what's what. It's quite an easy job and you might find the problem is solved with a quick turn of the adjuster.

Right, i had a good look today. I`d bought a new set of shoes, but tbh it didn`t need them. Ihad the discs off and cleaned them up, tightened the handbrake adjuster nuts. Now it holds great!
- But ! I held the disc firmly, and it still moved from side to side, probably an inch, and there was a slight knocking from under the centre of the car. Could it be a prop joint worn? driveshaft,diff,etc?
