timing chain

i know this has probably been brought up before..i have a 318is with 130k and its is perfect,its a bit noisy for 5 mins or so in the morning but i think thats the tappets...anyway i hear the chain needs to be replaced at 100k,,ive already replaced my tensioner recently but i dont fancy getting the chain done as its 600 quid...whats the opinions on this from you guys.
is this just an old wives tale.

I am by no means a mechanic - but i also have an iS and it's around this time they should be done. best to buy one thats been changed
Mine is on 97K and the timing belt has already been changed...
One of the other guys will tell you for sure

Mine was on 147k without a change and there was no sign (driving-wise) of wear, how many cars (318iS/M3) that you have heard of with a shagged timing chain?
As far as I'm aware there's only 1 car on here that's had that happen.
You say you don't fancy spending that kinda money on it, then why bother asking about it lol
Not really worth doing to be honest unless you rag the hell out of it, 130k isn't exactly much, my 147k still pulled like a train and always gave me the
face when I put my foot down.

i wasn't aware that they made any 4-pot trains
if you put 'pulled like a 6-pot' then i'd be impressed!

Cheers bud that puts my mind at rest,,,i just asked because if it was essential i had to get it done then i would have probably done an engine transplant(m20 2.5).i was quoted 400 pound to do the transplant but i had to get a donar car.

if the chain is not worn don't replace it. In extreme cases i've heard they can jump, and possibly snap. I read the snapping part somewhere. They are strong though as they are double row.

I did mine at 130k. Previous owner had run it too long on a worn tensioner. Even with a new tensioner it was still noisy.
When I took it to bits I found the cam sprockets were fairly worn, so I'm glad I did it. Took me about a day's labour.
Still running fins at 182k
