Hopefully someone will have experienced this.

I have an annoying clicking sound coming from either the passenger footwell, or behind the centre console. It seems to speed up and drop with the engine revs, and goes away when at idle and when I went right round a round about. It sounds a bit like a fan wheel or something rubbing against something.

Has anyone had this or know of a possible cause / cure?

That doesn't sound good

The car has been off the road for 18 months to maybe 2 years, so is in need of a good service. I thought it maybe some common loose connection of something.

probably tappets or noisey injectors, the rubbing may be something else

I was thinking the same thing. Coolant bled properly? You've not had the heater hoses at the bulkhead off and put on the wrong way around?

I certainly haven't, but you never know what happened in the previous 22 years its been around. Where would I find these hoses and how do I know the heater valve is on the wrong way round?

Try stuffing blu tac or plasticine behind the centre badge of the steering wheel, around the main bolt. This will give you a better idea of where the sound might be coming from, ie. interior or engine bay.

The two hoses are to be found at the rear of the engine bay, on the left hand, between the brake servo and the engine. They are around 20mm in diameter, and fit onto two stub pipes, one vertically above the other, coming through the bulkhead from the passenger compartment.
The hose going to the bottom stub pipe must be the one that comes from a connection on the rear of the cylinder head, and the top pipe must be the end of a long hose that runs alongside the engine, and tees off to the coolant bottle.
Unfortunately, the way these hoses lie naturally, before they are connected up, often leads the uninitiated to connect them the wrong way around.

Are these the ones you mean? Down underneath the brake fluid reservoir.

Iv followed where they lead and they connect up next to the inlet manifold

Those are the fuel feed and return lines. The one that is underneath in your second pic. operates at a pressure of 3 bar, so check that the pipe isn't a mass of cracks if you bend it.
The heater pipes are to the left of the brake servo - you're looking too far down.

Turn the heater dial to cold and see if its stops making a noise.
I've got a similar problem thats a piece of rust from the cylinder block thats hitting the heater valve when the revs rise and the speed of the water increases, you can hear it dancing about.
Pull the heater hoses off and stick a hose pipe in the top pipe going through the bulkhead, to get the best flow you'll need the ignition on and the heater dial all the way to the red.
Then try not to get the live terminal on the starter motor wet.

If it is rust you'ed be best flushing the rest of the cooling system as well and replacing the antifreeze using de-ionised water to try to slow down the damage already done.

Iv swapped the pipes around and been for a quick drive, it seems a little better but there is
still a click. Will that mean that rust is in the pipe?

One question, does the ticking noise increase when the engine revs? Or when the car speeds up/ slows down?

When the car is idle rev the engine and see if the clicking noise occurs. If it doesn't, check your hand brake cables. Might sound strange but they could well be your issue. It's happened to me and someone else on here.

So were they the wrong way around?

Iv no idea if they were right or not. That pic is after I have swapped them over. The top one is now going into the bulkhead, and the bottom dissapears under the engine somewhere.

To answer Phatz, it clicks just with the revs, even when revving in neutral...
