Removing Camshaft on an Automatic M20 URGENT

Hi Guys,
I've done some reserch on this and seems the camshaft can be replaced without taking the head off - although a tricky job.
My mechanic is doing this today based on what I said but called to say if its possible to do this on an automatic as he's raised the engine as far up as it goes but the gearbox is getting in the way.
He said another option is to remove the grill, radiator and airconditioning radiator then slide it out of the gap...
Work has stopped on the car at the momment so would really appreciate some advice on this - Has anyone done this on a M20 Auto that could advise please?
Mines a 1986 325.
Thanks in advance!
