E30 Zone

Evening all.

My car occasionally cuts out on left hand bends. The symptoms are very similar to the DME relay fault that others have experienced (tachometer drops to zero, normally the car starts straight up again, but occasionally refuses to start for a few minutes after its cut out.)

I replaced the relay with a new BMW item last week hoping it would cure it but it hasn't made a blind bit of difference. It only seems to do it when there is little or no throttle applied. Any suggestions as to what's going on? It's getting quite tedious having to dip the clutch and blip the throttle on tight bends just to stop it dying on me.

do you have a large bunch of keys......if you do take em off and try just the ignition key, it could be the ignition barrel is breaking contact and cutting out. Seen this in a golf

Nope my key bunch is pretty minimal. The ignition is still on when it cuts out as all the lights come on.

Check the power lead that runs from battery to fuse box had the same problem you describe with a touring, wire was loose where it connects under fuse box.

DME realy is a possibilty

Remind us what your car is?

If you've done engine swaps etc then it could be fuel tank related if you have fitted say an in-tank pump to what was originally a carb engined car (which would not have a swirl pot in the tank)

Not unless BMW supplied me a duff one as I only get a new one last week as I thought that was what was causing the problem.

It's a 318i touring with M42 (lack of) powaaaahhh.

It's not fuel tank related if the tacho drops instantly to zero!
Short answer to the question is to make good whatever is loose, starting with making sure the C101 engine loom connector is properly locked together.

I had this once on a metro. (let the laughing begin!) It turned out it was the ignition coil, apparently, the coil had been weeping, therefore exposing the winding on a left hand corner. Now I'm not mechanically minded enough to question the mechanic, but a new coil sorted the problem, but only after several dealers garages had the car with no success!

are your engine mounts shot / had this in my 325 . it was pulling my induction hose out
